Next Big Thing Interview:

I was recently asked by the author of The Dating Dilemmas of Delilah, Victoria Thurman, to join other writers in the answering of ten questions for The Next Big Thing. Be sure to read to the very end so as not to miss links to other grand reads.

1) What is your working title of your book? Currently I have four published titles: Tuffy, The Favor, Pieces of the Past, and The Contract.

2) Where did the idea come from for the book? My ideas come from all sorts of places, photos, conversations, events, etc. For example, the idea for Tuffy was born when a neighbor gave me an antique wheelchair which dates to about WW2 and given its olive drab painted metal, appears to have been of military issue. The name, Tuffy, had been one of my uncles. Pieces of the Past was created out of my love for old buildings. Just imagine the tales their old walls hold!

3) What genre does your book fall under? It depends on the title; Tuffy and Pieces of the Past are a combination of historical fiction with a hint of romance, whereas The Favor and The Contract are listed as romance novels with a touch of history. It has been suggested that Pieces of the Past also be listed as young adult.

4) Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition? The funny part about this question is that while I've not thought about who should play who in any of the novels, several readers have suggested that Matthew McConaughey would be perfect for the role of Hunter in the screen version of The Favor.

5) What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

A TALE OF FRIENDSHIPS:

The Favor: Life long friends, Hunter & Griffin, are left with no choice but to answer the question, how far would they go for a friend.

CIVIL WAR ADVENTURE:

Pieces of the Past: Follow Simon on his quest to discover his family's past while restoring the forgotten homestead.

UNCOVER PAST SECRETS:

Tuffy: The story of Brody Harrigan, stationed at Pearl Harbor in 1941 & the secret he keeps for decades.

WHEN A CONTRACT STARTS TO MEAN THAN ONE THING:

The Contract:

Jackson needed an employee; he also needed a life and had no idea hiring Leigh would fill both voids.

6) Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency? Thus far I have been self-published, however, I am not certain as of yet in which direction the next novel shall be printed. I suppose it will depend on when the novel is ready for release.

7) How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript? Again, it depends on the write. Sometimes I get the idea and it takes care of itself seemingly overnight. I suppose I tend to lose track. However, I pity the person who tries to make sense of my note scribbling as once an idea is struck, I tend to tinker on anything from paper sacks to grocery receipts, taping them on notepaper, drawing arrows, highlighting, numbering, you name it. My husband is often surprised when he reads the final draft as he cant believe the story evolved from such a mess of notes.

8) What other books would you compare this story to within your genre? Specific titles don't come to mind right off, yet I would say titles which take fictional characters, blend factual events, and are properly researched.

9) Who or what inspired you to write this book? I would have to say my daddy and my son. My daddy taught me to believe in myself, that you don't fail if you try, you fail if you don't. Meanwhile, my son is working hard at following his dreams, screen writing, and I admire his determination, so I set out to publish my first book at the midway point in life, to show him it is never to late to achieve your dreams.

10) What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest? I have been told that not only is there a little something for every reader, but that my female characters are unique, wheelchair dependent individuals who are anything but dependent. Or perhaps the fact that I take pride in my research, using real facts, places, or historical events, simply drop fictional characters into the pages.
